![]() I feel that it’s always heartbreaking for us to have our favourites change or be lost. I can understand why people are lamenting it’s loss not because the newer one is bad, it’s brilliant, but I find it’s almost altogether a different fragrance. I believe the tops notes are altogether missing from my sample, but with what’s remaining, I have to completely agree with Lucas Turin on both the tarry and herbal aspects of the original. I ordered a teeny tiny sample of the pre-reformulated vintage version as I wanted to understand why some have been upset by the reworking of RG. ![]() Or, yourself if you just want to convey you mean business while smelling good. Who is Rive Gauche? Miranda Priestly when she’s in Paris, The Queen of Narnia, and people who occupy marbled buildings. Extra points for the fact that this is also an EDT (but not that that holds much weight anymore) As much as I love it, No 5 had sadly made itself scarce by morning with RG reigning supreme. Out of nothing but curiosity, I sprayed RG on the inner crook of one elbow, and Chanel No 5 edp inside the other, (2 designer aldehydic florals) and went to sleep for 10 hours. Rive Gauche’s longevity and sillage are very decent for a designer fragrance. She’d then proceed to go about her day with a flick of her immaculately coiffed hair. RG is from start to finish, an ice queen who’d rip out your still beating heart and serve it to you. The base on drying down is as expected, warmer than the opening, but in no way does ever become a warm fragrance I would describe this scent as a very radiant vintage floral. Soon the rose and florals intensify, and the fragrance becomes slightly waxier, warmer and even sour (I mean that only in the best possible way) Facets of RG also dance on that line between soapy and powdery. I can already smell the vetiver accompanied by citrus notes, and the beginning of a shy rose. On spraying Rive Gauche I get a metallic, colossal burst of aldehydes. I’m also kind of obsessed with the flacon. This steely mistress also happens to be, in every way, an elegant beauty. ![]() To me this smells cold, restrained and quite serious of old money. In a market flooded with fragrances that’ll make your teeth fall out, Rive Gauche is a dry, crisp breath of aldehydic fresh air.
